We are bombarded day in and day out with toxins in the environment. It is so important to have a regular detoxification regimen to get rid of them in order to support our skin and general health.
The build up of toxins has many effects on the skin including acne, aging, and other chronic conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Obviously, when our skin touches certain chemicals it can cause rashes, sores, and burns, but today we are looking more at the things that can affect our skin over time, rather than immediately.
Detox pathways mostly happen in the liver, but all tissues have some activity, especially the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, kidneys, and skin.
There are many ways to help our body detoxify in order to try to prevent disease and restore health. We can support the processes through:
My favorite way to detox my skin and body is through sweating. This can be achieved by sweating during exercise, but I love to get in a sauna on a regular basis. I, personally, aim for 3 days a week. Not only does sweating purify, but infrared also helps rejuvenate the skin.
I personally prefer an infrared sauna ( which is low EMF) to a steam sauna. I don’t tolerate the moist heat well, I much prefer the dry heat. Additionally, I feel there are further benefits to infrared over steam.
The following are benefits that can be seen with regular sauna use.
This is a great way to excrete chemicals in the body. When we use a sauna, it brings the toxins out into the bloodstream. We then need to remove them as waste through the skin, the urine, bowel movements, and the liver.
It is important to keep those bowels moving so that the toxins are removed. It is also wise to help support the liver and often people do that through the use of certain supplements like magnesium, glycine, taurine, B vitamins, and amino acids (I don’t recommend adding any supplements without discussing with your medical provider). Drinking lots of water will also help flush out the toxins.
By increasing our body temperature, this creates an artificial fever. When doing so, that increases white blood cell production and helps boost the immune system.

I believe everyone should prioritize doing regular detox strategies. Knowing that we can't always avoid toxic exposures, it is comforting that there are things we can do to support our body in detoxifying. A sauna is a great way to do so!
The brand I have and love is Sunlighten Saunas. This is what they have to say, “Bring Sunlighten’s healing infrared into your wellness rhythm, and experience the benefits of the most effective, highest quality near, mid and far infrared available. Having an infrared sauna in your home gives you easy access to a foundational wellness tool you'll love. Sunlighten IR saunas are the result of scientific study and commitment to excellence to give you a place of hope, health and happiness. We offer 4 sauna collections, each with a different light combination and varying levels of functionality and aesthetics.”
For me, this has been one of the best purchases I have ever made and I am very happy with the quality.
